Concerned About Scoliosis?

Scoliosis can be a quite frightening thing.

Especially, if you are a parent, and you suspect your child has a spinal curve, or begins expressing signs of spinal pain at an early age.

I get the question, “Is there anything you can do to help scoliosis?”

The answer really is.. It depends.

There are two types of scoliosis

Scoliosis

The first is what is known as a functional scoliosis. Which, when put in the simplest of terms means, a spinal curvature that is being caused by some sort of anatomical variant, or congenital bone development problem that is honestly out of the person’s control. In my opinion, very little can be done to correct that type of scoliosis, however, a person can live without pain, or symptoms, and some even have no idea that they have a curvuture at all. It is the nervous system that we want to be concerned with in all sort of scoliosis situations, but especially those in a functional scoliosis state.

The second is known as idiopathic scoliosis. These are the ones that my eyes light up when I see them in my office. Because the term “idiopathic” literally means “we have no idea what is causing the spine to curve..”

There is no bone developmental problem, or other type of problem that can be identified, or be the “cause” of the spinal wanting to curve.

But, we as upper cervical doctors in certain cases know EXACTLY what could be causing it, and we have seen some pretty unbelievable things in these types of cases.

If the upper bone in the neck has misaligned, it causes two major things that can sometimes cause HUGE changes in the spinal curvature. One- it causes the head to tilt one way, or the other, which can cause the rest of the spine downstream to need to compensate in order to keep proper balance, coordination, and equilibrium. Secondly- the nerve system begins to malfunction, which is the system that controls posture, muscle tone, and spinal stability.

Check out this VERY cool case, we saw in our office with a scoliosis patient in their mid 50’s! To learn more about our process, and how we like to manage scoliosis cases check out this video!
